"CARBOMAT"
CO2 INLINE MEASUREMENT & CONTROL SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION
Carbomat Ltd. design and manufacture the Carbomat in-line CO2 measurement and control system which replicates laboratory methods of measuring dissolved CO2 in any carbonated beverage every 13 seconds and converts the results into a continuous 4-20mA signal for instrument display, recording and control of CO2 in solution.
The Carbomat forms an integral part of IDD's automated carbonating systems and can also be supplied as a stand alone unit(s) for your new or existing carbonating and monitoring system(s).
METHOD OF OPERATION
A 6mm sample line is connected from the beverage line through the measuring cylinder and returned to the beverage line. When the piston is in the "up" position a free flow of beverage continually passes through the measuring chamber, when the piston is in the "down" position the flow is diverted through a bypass system leaving a fresh 30mm sample trapped in the measuring chamber. The rapid down stroke of the piston reduces the sample in the measuring chamber from process pressure to vacuum. At the same time the impact of the pistonon the base of the cylinder provides a mechanical shock which causes the CO2 gas to be totally expelled from the sample into the headspace vacuum.
MEASUREMENT
The measuring chamber is fitted with a pressure transmitter and a temperature probe. From these measuring devices the Process Logic Controller (PLC)calculates the precise CO2 content in the beverage. The result is converted into a 4-20mA signal which can be displayed in g/l or v/v and used to control the CO2 input via the IDD "closed loop" PID control and comparitor system.
The upward stroke of the piston ejects the analysed sample from the measuring chamber via a check valve back to the beverage line allowing a free flow of beverage into the measuring cylinder in readiness for the next sample.
No purging nor purge gas is required for the measuring cylinder.
SANITARY
Sanitary standards are assured by subjecting the Carbomat to the CIP system. In the CIP mode the Carbomat performs the same functions as in the run mode thereby ensuring that all wetted parts are routinely cleaned. In the CIP mode the output signal reads zero and the connected control equipment does not operate.
ADVANTAGES
1. Accurate - Fresh samples tested to 2 decimal places in grams/liter or vol/vol.
2. Fast - 13 second cycle and sampling time.
3. Responsive - Each sampling is a REAL result with an immediate output to the CO2 control system.
4. Suitability - An accurate monitoring and control system for beer, soft drinks, mineral water or any beverage containing dissolved CO2.
5. Low Maintenance - Can be easily maintained by the process plant staff with technical support available from IDD.
6. Convenient - The measuring chamber does not require to be refreshed so purge gas is NOT required.
7. Sanitary - The system can be cleaned and sterilized by whatever CIP system and regime the plant uses.
8. Easy Adjustment - The "Zero" adjustment screw is the only adjustment necessary to calibrate inline with laboratory control standards.
9. Durable - All stainless steel enclosure and wetted parts. All the electrical sub-components are supplied by major international companies.
10. Tried & Tested - In use in 20 countries around the world under all types of conditions.
CONSTRUCTION
The Carbomat consists of a precision engineered 316 stainless steel measuring cylinder and piston fitted with three PTFE sealing rings. Motive power is provided by a stainless steel air cylinder. The entire unit is housed in a stainless steel cabinet with a separate IP65 (NEMA 4) rated and UL/CUL certified compartment for the PLC and electrical connections.
